It’s not that history repeats itself – it doesn’t. But the issues that concerned and divided people in the past are still with us. Thankfully, the questions that the Friends Ambulance Unit (FAU) and the Friends Relief Service (FRS) had to ask themselves during the second world war are not usually so acute today: their histories are redolent with debate, and decisions, which involved close collaboration with military authorities. The proposal that there should be a memorial to their service in the National Arboretum raises a similar concern, and another opportunity to find an answer.
