Now is the Time

10 03 2010 | by Sam Walton | Read 551 times
Sam Walton describes a new ecumenical coalition working to strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
‘We cannot tackle the threat of nuclear terrorism by simply rehearsing old doctrines of defence. The simple fact is that more nuclear weapons do not make for a safer world. We must instead turn to the universal adoption of common rules and standards, enforced by international treaties. It is crucial that all nuclear armed states now demonstrate a willingness to redefine their concepts of security.’

Are these the words of a veteran peace activist? A Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament press officer? A Friend who has been committed for years to getting rid of nuclear weapons? In fact they are the words of Tom Butler, bishop of Southwark, and he and a whole alliance of churches, Britain Yearly Meeting included, have come together to launch the Now is the Time campaign.
