Selly Oak Quakers have started a Young Adult Meeting after attracting some new attenders in the same age range.

Hilary Topp, local development worker (LDW) for West Midlands and Gloucestershire Area Meeting, told the Friend: ‘The initial prompt for starting the group came from an enquiry that was passed onto me from a young adult Friend who wanted to know if there was a group, or a particular Meeting that had other Friends in this age group. Although there are a couple of Meetings with one or two Friends in that age group, there wasn’t a group. After talking to other Friends in CEQ [Central England Quakers], we asked Selly Oak Friends because of the location near to one of the universities (there are five universities in Birmingham), because it has good bus and train links, and because they already had a couple of post-grad students attending on Sunday mornings.’

Six young adult Friends attended the first Meeting on 12 March. The new group is now being advertised through the Area Meeting, and also through Young Friends General Meeting, and in Britain Yearly Meeting’s newsletter and web page for young adults. The group is open to Friends aged eighteen to thirty-five in the West Midlands area and meets on the second Wednesday of every month, from 6-8pm at Selly Oak Meeting House.
