Ann Forsyth finds that when we answer with ‘that of God’, difficult questions can be overcome
At age seventeen I was asked ‘Was Hitler a war monger or an opportunist?’ I finally opted for ‘war monger’, although now, I consider he was both: I find no contradiction in this. Nor am I uncomfortable maintaining a peaceful stance while someone else prefers a fighting one: indeed Quakers must ask themselves how they can do so, in a world preoccupied with weaponry and the use of aggression as a ‘life tool’.
