A fresh look at Yearly Meeting
Jack’s teddy bears
The story of Jack Hoyland’s teddy bears has touched readers.
Jack drove himself relentlessly in his Quaker work and, finally, had a breakdown. Part of his therapy was to make his bears. He used to take a huge bag of the ‘makings’ around with his everywhere, sitting with them in meetings and committees.
Ted Milligan tells Eye that when Jack had recovered, he adopted a principle that is still valid, especially for Quaker workaholics: ‘Do nothing, for as long as you can’.
We suspect that after the rigours of four busy days at Britain Yearly Meeting many Friends will cherish this sentiment.
