A Thomas Paine footstep | Lewes Quakers

Footprints for outreach
Lewes Quakers turned a potential problem into an opportunity for outreach. A statue of Tom Paine close to the Meeting house was to be unveiled on Sunday 4 July (celebration of American independence), at the same time as Meeting for Worship.
Our Friend Bob Booth takes up the story: ‘With the agreement of Lewes council, laminated card “footprints” stuck to the ground led from the library to the Meeting house where there was a welcome with refreshments. Each footprint had a quote of Tom Paine’s with its eighteenth century date – often from his books Common Sense and the Rights of Man.’ About 100 visitors took the opportunity to visit the Quakers.
