Fiona Foulkes describes her two-week course on conflict resolution
Talk Together, a new initiative, met for its inaugural conference this August in Oxford. Aimed at teaching students conflict resolution skills and providing a forum for students from either side of a conflict to come together, I was lucky enough to attend as a ‘neutral’ student. As a group of twenty-two, including eight Saharawis, we studied the so-called ‘forgotten’ conflict of Western Sahara alongside the techniques used for conflict resolution. We were, originally, to be joined by groups of six students from Laayoune, in the Western Sahara area (the ‘Oxford Six’) and seven Moroccan students, but both groups were prevented from attending.
The idea [of nonviolent communication] is to express your feelings, needs and requests, rather than making demands and blaming the other person.
