Thought for the Week: Holding in the Light

'Holding in the Light (for Freda, who is a friend but not a Friend)' by Joanna Dales

What can it mean to hold you in the Light?

It cannot change God’s Will, or Fate, or Chance,

The chain, the world-without-end linear dance

Of causes and effects, turn wrong to right.

To pray, to supplicate whatever might

Occur that it accommodate my wants

Is foolishness, is sheer irrelevance;

Deserting reason’s day for ancient night.

Yet, if I bring my Inward Light to shine

Upon your suffering, and on the grace

Visible in your life and in your face

It clothes them in a radiance divine,

Illuminating not just you, but all

The others among whom my steps may fall.

‘Since my early years I have had a sense that there was a universal presence . . .’ Mmmmmmm! me too! Sooooo frustrating not being able to SAY anything about it.  My first real attempt was to say that I felt a strong sense of identity with everything and everyone, what I would probably now say was a sense of unity or oneness.  One just hopes it expresses itself for the better in our lives somehow.  Couldn’t be without it though.  Like you it has sustained me through some dark times, including cancer. Thank you Jane.
