Children's Society and Bail for Immigration Detainees join coalition
The sanctuary pledge, a statement calling on politicians to campaign responsibly on immigration and community issues, received a boost today as the Children’s Society and Bail for Immigration Detainees backed it. They join a range of organisations and groups from across civil society who have already put their name to the issue.
The sanctuary pledge has been backed by the Baptist Union, the Church of England, the United Reformed Church, the Methodist Church, the Jewish Council for Racial Equality, the Salvation Army, the Muslim Council of Britain and others.
The aim of the pledge is to build a political consensus in support of reaffirming Britain’s historic tradition of providing sanctuary to people fleeing persecution.
Part of the pledge is to support policies that will end the detention of children and families for immigration reasons.
At their Meeting for Sufferings on 27 March, Quakers from Britain Yearly Meeting will consider whether to back a campaign to end immigration detention of children.
I’m so glad to hear about MfS consideration of children’s detention. What is going on at Yarls Wood is truly disturbing.
